Have you ever had an experience where you're having a really good day, feeling so confident that nothing can shake it off, and then you have one negative interaction with someone, and it throws off all the good juju you were radiating? You're not alone. We live in an energetic universe, and we are all energy beings constantly exchanging energy with one another. As Einstein’s famous equation E=mc² illustrates, there’s a profound relationship between energy and matter, reminding us that everything in our universe, including ourselves, has an energetic component.

In our physical reality, it may seem like everything is solid and concrete, but the energy that is associated with each object or being is often invisible to the untrained eye. Yet, if we choose to tune in, we can almost always feel it. You’ve probably heard someone say, “Oh, that person has bad vibes.” What are these vibes if not a reflection of someone’s energy in that moment?

At first glance, our world seems full of separate objects. You might think you're distinct from the device you're holding, or that the chair you're sitting on is separate from the floor beneath it. Even when things touch, there appears to be a clear boundary. But here's where it gets interesting: everything has its own energy, and this energy doesn't play by the rules of physical boundaries we see with our eyes.

Imagine each object or being infused with and surrounded by an invisible energy field, like a glowing aura. This energy permeates every part of the object or being, existing both within and around it, extending beyond its physical edges. These energy fields don't just stay put – they reach out and mingle with the fields of other objects and beings around them. It's like a constant dance of invisible energies, always interacting, always influencing each other. And here's the kicker: this interaction isn't limited by distance. It might sound far-fetched, but think about Quantum Entanglement – a mind-bending concept in physics where particles can instantly affect each other, no matter how far apart they are. In the same way, our energy fields can interact across vast distances, connecting us in ways we're only beginning to understand.

So the next time you're in a room full of people, or even sitting alone, remember: there's a whole world of energy interactions happening around you, invisible to the eye but very real in its effects. It's a bit like having your own personal energy Wi-Fi, constantly sending and receiving signals with everything and everyone around you!

These interactions are usually unseen (since not everyone has their clairvoyant senses fully open), but they can certainly be felt. It’s like you feel happy when you come across a genuinely joyful person, and you can feel angry or fearful when you meet someone who’s really angry. What happens there? Well, mirror neurons are definitely at play, but on an energetic level, information is also being transferred.

The same goes for objects. You might have some objects (like your favorite blanket) that bring you comfort because of the energetic association you’ve built with them. When the object’s field interacts with yours—whether in person or at a distance—it invokes comfort in your energy field, and you feel it. I could go on, but you get the point.

I think it’s helpful to touch on how energetic information gets transferred. For this, let me introduce the amazing Barbara Brennan, an astrophysicist, psychotherapist, and author who has done incredible work in this field. She explains mechanisms like bioplasmic streamers, cords, and harmonic induction, which are key to understanding how energy moves between our fields.

In her book Hands of Light, Brennan talks about bioplasmic streamers—energetic tubular channels that extend from our bodies, especially through the chakras and other layers of the energy field. They’re like little highways of energy connecting people, and you can really feel them in emotionally charged situations. When these streamers connect deeply, they form what Brennan calls energetic "cords." These cords can form through relationships, deep experiences, or emotional bonds, and they’re always influencing the energy between two people, for better or worse.

Now, harmonic induction is the next-level energy mechanism in Brennan’s framework. It occurs when a healer or someone with heightened energetic perception changes their own energy to influence another person’s frequency. Imagine two tuning forks—when one resonates at a certain note, bringing a second tuning fork near it causes the second one to vibrate at the same frequency. That’s what happens with energy. When the healer and the recipient’s frequencies sync up, energy flows from the healer, raising the recipient’s frequency and encouraging self-healing and balance in their energy field.

Now, let’s simplify these concepts a bit. Here’s a model I personally use: Imagine your energy field as a sponge. Every experience, interaction, or exposure to anything affects it. Energetic "muck" or stagnant energy sticks to your field and alters your frequency. Without regular clearing (conscious or not), your energy changes based on what you encounter.

Picture this: You wake up after a bad night's sleep - your field's already off. Your coffee tastes awful - another hit. Then a rude driver nearly crashes into you - bam, more negative energy. By lunchtime, you're carrying all these energetic impacts. You meet a friend, and you're not just feeling off, you might even be influencing their energy. If the restaurant's out of your favorite dish? Well, that might just be the last straw!

And that’s why we need—wait for it—energetic clearing skills. Us humans? We've forgotten about this, especially in the modern Western world. Animals, though, they've got it down and do this naturally. Take my dog Anubis. When he’s stressed or excited (whether by another dog barking, a missed treat, or when I pick him up against his will), he’ll shake it off once the event is over, by physically shaking his whole body. This shake is his way of discharging excess energy and resetting his field. Wild animals do this too. A deer outruns a tiger, gives a good shake, then calmly goes to grazing like nothing happened. We humans? We tend to hold onto that energy, letting it color everything else we experience.

There are many ways to clear your energy. What are they? Before we dive in, a fundamental step is taking a pause and setting an intention. You can't clear effectively if you're rushing from task to task. If you’ve got time, you can even make a small ritual of it—light a candle, for example. But that’s not always possible, especially if you’re clearing on the go. Just remember, safety first! Don’t try these methods while driving, handling heavy machinery, or sitting somewhere dangerous like a cliff edge where getting in a non-ordinary state of consciousness could be dangerous. (You get the idea!)

1. Physically Shake It Off : A Simple Yet Effective Technique

Let's start with the simplest method - physically shaking it off. I mean literally shaking your body vigorously. Flail those arms and legs like you're trying to throw off invisible, sticky energy. Imagine you're shaking off all that accumulated energetic gunk. If you're feeling brave, go ahead and do this in public. I've definitely done some shakes at the gym and during my aerial silks class. But hey, if you're not quite ready for that level of public energy clearing, no worries. You can always excuse yourself to the restroom or find a private quiet corner to practice this. This method is fantastic for a quick energy reset, especially when you're on the go. So don’t hesitate to shake it off whenever you need to clear your energy and feel more centered!

2. Meditation : Connecting with Your Inner Energy

Meditation is a powerhouse tool for influencing your energy in countless positive ways. For this article, I'm using it as a general term for getting into a more hypnotic state of mind where you can connect with your own energy. Once you're there, the world becomes your oyster!

You can reach this state through mindfulness, guided meditation, visualization, or even self-hypnosis. Use whatever works best for you—maybe it's your own commands or listening to something guided through earphones. Once you're in that space, imagine your energy however feels right. It could be a bubble surrounding you, interpenetrating your body, or a bright light shining from your core and radiating 360 degrees. Go with what resonates with you—that's your energy responding!

And remember, it doesn’t have to be visual. You might feel it in your body or imagine hearing a particular note or piece of music. Whatever works for you is perfect.

Now, ask your energy to show you how outside influences are impacting it. If you're new to this, be patient. You might see a different color pop up in your field or hear a jagged noise interrupting the sweet music of your natural energy (shout out to all you clairaudients!).

Once you recognize this energetic impact, it's time to clear it out. You can say aloud, "Whatever doesn't belong in my field, leave right now." Or visualize the color of that energy traveling down through your body or field and into the earth where it gets transmuted. Feel free to get creative here!

After clearing, I always like to charge my energy field. Sometimes I say out loud, "I command all of my energy to return to me." Then I wait and soon feel energized as it returns.

Sometimes I visualize a gold light rising up from the core of the earth or from within the core of my being and filling up my body and energy field all around 360 degrees with gold light.

This recharging step is the best part of the clearing process. It feels so nourishing as my energy fills up again. And whatever I do afterward, I can really feel the joyful energy I bring to that task or interaction. What a gift!

3. Breathwork : Harnessing the Power of Breath

There are so many types of breathwork for energy clearing! Let me share my current favorite: the 'Box Breath'. It's simple yet powerful. Here's how it goes: inhale to a count of 4, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold for 4, and repeat. I personally love doing it to a count of 6, but experiment to find your sweet spot. (Just a heads up: don't hold your breath so long you pass out, and don't expect miracles from just one cycle!)

Keep repeating and give it time. As you continue, you might notice your body relaxing, your jaw loosening, your shoulders dropping. You might feel more grounded or more aware of your body. Yawning is common too - that's your vagus nerve activating and your sympathetic nervous system calming down.

Living in our modern, busy world, I find there's so much energetic impact on my field and nervous system. That's why I often do box breathing as I fall asleep. It speeds up my relaxation process, and I've noticed on nights when I practice, my heart rate variability (HRV) is higher the next morning. Quick science note: HRV is an indicator of your nervous system's stress load. Higher HRV while sleeping means your heart rate could drop, giving your heart, body, and nervous system the deep rest they need.

Remember, box breathing isn't the only game in town. There's slow breathing, deeper belly breathing, breath counting, circular breathing, and more. Explore different types to see what resonates with you, and stick with what you enjoy most. Your body and energy field will thank you!

4. Exercise : Energizing Body and Mind

Exercise is a game-changer for both your body and mind, and science backs this up! It's not just about physical health—exercise has some serious psychological benefits too. Many people feel amazing after exercising (thanks to those endorphins!). Studies show how exercise increases blood flow (great for circulation), lowers inflammation, and reduces cortisol (a stress hormone that can cause problems when chronically elevated).

From an energetic perspective, exercise helps increase energy flow in your field, making your aura bigger and brighter. This helps get rid of anything stuck or stagnant in your energy. Additional energy comes in through the first chakra from the earth, and even through other chakras—taking in from the Universal Energy Field (UEF).

Here's an analogy I like to use: Imagine a glass of dirty water. When you place it under a waterfall, the fresh water pours in, pushing out all the dirty water. Eventually, the glass is left with nothing but clear water. This is exactly what happens with our energy field during exercise.

But here's a word of caution: there is such a thing as too much exercise. Over-exercising can lead to chronic increases in sympathetic nervous system tone, negatively impact gut health, and increase inflammation. From an energetic standpoint, the energy can become more stagnant and tight in the field, on top of holding onto any energetic muck that impacted it in the first place.

When I talk about using exercise for energetic clearing, I'm mostly referring to gentler modalities like yoga, walking, or hiking. If weight lifting or HIIT workouts work for you, great! But avoid overdoing it, listen to your body, and give yourself enough rest between sessions for full recovery.

I'd like to mention Dr. Terry Wahls (developer of the Wahls protocol, MD, Internal Medicine Specialist, Functional Medicine Expert, and Multiple Sclerosis Researcher & Advocate). She promotes the idea that you should stop exercising before you feel exhausted. She advises people not to exercise to the point where it takes more than 30 minutes to recover back to their baseline energy levels. Even though she recommends this for patients with multiple sclerosis or other degenerative conditions of the central nervous system, I apply it to myself because it helps me keep my energy field bright and clear. Happy Exercising!

5. Nature : A Reservoir of Nourishing Energy

I am perpetually grateful for the vast reservoir of nourishing and replenishing energy that the Universe has blessed us with through nature. It doesn't require a highly attuned individual to perceive the profound shift in body and mind that occurs when one connects with the natural world. Whether you're gazing at the ocean from a sandy beach, hiking a mountain trail while breathing in crisp air and taking in the expansive sky, or simply spending time in a garden - big or small - nature has a transformative effect on our energy systems. Even indoor plants can work their magic on our energetic well-being.

When we immerse ourselves in nature, our energy fields naturally expand without conscious effort. There's no need for deliberate meditation or breathwork; our brain waves naturally slow towards alpha waves as our focus of attention broadens, moving away from the narrow, constricted state we often experience in our daily lives. This shift allows any stuck energy or external impacts on our fields to naturally dissipate, simultaneously strengthening our grounding connection to the earth.

The experience of meditating or practicing breathwork in nature is truly awe-inspiring, amplifying the benefits of these practices. Martha Beck, a renowned sociologist, author, and one of Oprah's original life coaches, shares a fascinating account of her deep connection with nature. During a meditation session in the woods, with bird seed sprinkled on her body, she experienced a profound sense of unity with her surroundings. As birds perched on her, Beck felt the boundaries between herself, the birds, and the entire natural world dissolve, illustrating the powerful potential for connection that nature offers us.

This natural energy clearing method is not only effective but also readily accessible. Whether it's a brief moment with a houseplant or an extended forest bathing session, connecting with nature provides a simple yet powerful way to cleanse and rejuvenate our energy fields.

6. Grounding Practices : A Natural Energy Clearing Method

Grounding practices have consistently proven to be effective in clearing energy. While some energy workers and intuitives consider grounding a separate step from energy clearing, my experience has shown that increased grounding naturally initiates energy clearing. The Earth's energy field serves as a vast reservoir, continuously interacting with the energetic fields of people and other beings.

Scientific studies on grounding have revealed fascinating insights into this process. When we are physically insulated from the Earth (due to constant footwear or lack of direct contact with the ground), positively charged free radicals can accumulate in our bodies. Upon grounding, electrons naturally flow from the Earth into our bodies. These electrons act as natural antioxidants, neutralizing the positively charged free radicals within our system. This exchange can effectively reduce the oxidative stress in our bodies and may help decrease inflammation.

To illustrate this concept, consider the gentle electric shock you might experience after removing a sweater and touching a grounded metallic object. This phenomenon demonstrates the transfer of charge that occurs during grounding, albeit on a much smaller scale than what happens during intentional grounding practices.

In my personal experience, I've observed that when I engage in grounding practices—whether by visualizing a pillar of light dropping down from the legs and feet to the Earth's core, walking barefoot in nature, or embracing a tree—my energy field relaxes. Any stuck energy or impacts my field may be holding begin to loosen and dissipate, allowing for a more balanced energetic state.

This grounding process not only helps clear our energy but also reconnects us with the Earth's natural rhythms and healing properties. By incorporating regular grounding practices into our routines, we can maintain a clearer, more balanced energetic state, enhancing our overall well-being and resilience to energetic disturbances.

7. Creativity : An Overlooked Tool for Energy Clearing

Creativity is often an overlooked tool when considering energetic clearing methods. Artists and creators frequently speak of the flow state they experience when immersed in their creative processes, a state where worldly concerns seem to dissolve. I believe that humans are inherently designed to create, a function perhaps linked to the evolution of our opposable thumbs. As all our actions have an energetic impact on our fields, the influence of creativity is invariably positive. When we engage in creative activities, our energy field relaxes, and any stagnant energy it holds begins to dissipate.

It’s crucial to understand that the value lies in the act of creation itself, not in the perfection of the end product. Young children exemplify this concept beautifully. Provide a group of five-year-olds with brushes, colors, and paper, and they’ll enthusiastically create without a care for the outcome. This uninhibited approach to creativity—creating for the sake of creating without judgment—is key to its energetic benefits.

Martha Beck, whom I’ve mentioned before, conducted a personal experiment during the COVID pandemic, exploring painting as a tool to manage anxiety. She engaged in free painting without the intention of creating something “correct” or “good.” Beck observed that she would enter flow states while painting, leading to significant reductions in her anxiety levels. She has been known to say that it’s impossible to be anxious while freely creating (without expectations and judgments, of course).

In my personal experience, when I create something purely for the sake of creation, I experience a profound sense of joy and a release from worries. From an energetic perspective, I’ve observed that when I’m in this joyful, expansive state, my energy field becomes clear and bright, with any stagnant or stuck energy dissolving. Thus, I view creativity as one of the gateways to achieving a clear energy field.

It’s important to note that creativity isn’t limited to visual arts. Any form of creative expression—be it singing, dancing, writing, or crafting—can serve as a powerful tool for energy clearing.

8. Smudging :  An Ancient Practice for Energy Clearing

Smudging is a technique that has been utilized by indigenous cultures worldwide since the inception of sacred ceremonies. This practice involves burning a herb, typically sage or Palo Santo, and then extinguishing the flame, leaving glowing embers that produce abundant smoke. This smoke is then directed towards a person, object, or space in need of energetic clearing, either by moving the herb around or by using a device such as a fan to guide the smoke in the desired direction.

I have extensively employed this method, particularly after concluding healing sessions with clients. Once the client has left my healing room, I find it essential to clear the healing space of any unwanted stagnant energy that may have been released during the session (which is, after all, the primary objective of the healing). My usual practice involves burning sage and opening windows to provide an outlet for the smoke after it has collected the unwanted energy.

This technique can also be applied to cleanse our own auras. By burning a sage stick, extinguishing the flame, and moving it around our body, we can ensure the smoke travels in all directions, creating a 360-degree cleansing effect. While sage is commonly used in North American Indigenous cultures, Palo Santo, popular in Amazonian cultures, is another effective option.

It’s worth noting that smudging does have limitations. It can be challenging to perform while out in public spaces, where burning sage might not be acceptable or practical. Additionally, one might not always carry the necessary materials. Despite these constraints, smudging remains a highly effective method that introduces a ceremonial element to the energy clearing process.

The practice of smudging not only serves to clear energy but also connects us to ancient wisdom and traditions, adding a deeper, more spiritual dimension to our energy clearing practices. When performed with intention and respect, smudging can be a powerful tool for maintaining energetic hygiene and creating sacred space.

9. Water : A Versatile Tool for Energy Clearing

Water, in its various forms, offers multiple applications for energetic clearing. The power of water in this context is so profound that even the simple act of gazing at the ocean and inhaling the sea air can induce a palpable sense of energy cleansing and field expansion.

Barbara Brennan, a renowned expert in the field of energy healing, has advocated for the use of warm sea salt baths to cleanse one's energy field of what she terms "dead organ energy" - stagnant and non-vital energy that accumulates in human energy fields and spaces. In my personal practice, I often enhance this method by adding baking soda and Epsom salt, along with some bubble bath for an added element of relaxation. For those inclined, the addition of herbs and essential oils can further augment this cleansing ritual, provided they are known to be soothing to your skin and do not cause any adverse reactions.

Another significant application of water in energy clearing is the simple act of drinking it. In our modern world, many individuals exist in a state of chronic dehydration due to insufficient water intake. This dehydrated state can lead to an accumulation of stagnant energy, making our fields more susceptible to the impacts of external experiences. Maintaining proper hydration not only supports kidney function but also aids the human energy field in flushing out unwanted energies to a certain extent.

It's crucial to emphasize the importance of sourcing clean water for these practices. Filtered or spring water is preferable, and it's advisable to avoid plastic bottles when possible. This is not only for environmental reasons but also to minimize potential contaminants and avoid the ingestion of microplastics, which have become a growing concern in bottled water.

By incorporating these water-based practices into our routines, we can harness the cleansing and rejuvenating properties of water to maintain a clearer, more vibrant energy field. Whether through immersion, visualization, or consumption, water offers a powerful and accessible tool for energy clearing.

10. Energy Healing : Professional Assistance for Energetic Clearing

While I’m a strong advocate for empowering individuals with tools to manage their own energy, there’s undeniable value in receiving energy healing from a skilled practitioner. The field of energy healing encompasses numerous techniques and schools, each offering unique approaches to clearing and balancing the energy field.

Imagine yourself lying comfortably on a massage table or sitting in a cozy chair, eyes closed, as a healer works with your energy. They might use hands-on techniques or work within your energetic field. Interestingly, physical proximity isn’t always necessary. Many healers now offer effective remote sessions via phone or video platforms like Zoom. This distance healing works thanks to our fundamental interconnectedness and some fascinating concepts from quantum physics like entanglement and non-locality.

Let me share a couple of popular energy healing modalities. First, there’s Reiki, where practitioners channel universal life force energy that naturally clears and balances your field as it flows through. Then we have the Brennan Healing Science, which offers a technique called chelation - a systematic process of clearing, balancing, and charging the human energy field. It’s like a thorough cleanse and recharge for your energetic system!

As someone certified in Reiki and trained at the Barbara Brennan School of Healing, I can attest to the similarities and effectiveness of these practices. Both offer powerful tools for maintaining energetic hygiene and promoting overall well-being.

Timing and Frequency of Energy Clearing :

While we’ve explored various techniques and the importance of energy clearing, it’s equally crucial to discuss when to implement these practices. The optimal time for energy clearing is whenever you sense a shift in your energy field, often reflected in your emotional state. This could be triggered by a range of experiences, from an aggravating interaction to simply being in the presence of someone undergoing emotional turmoil. Even if the person wasn’t directly rude to you, sensitive individuals might inadvertently absorb some of that energetic emotional burden.

Consider incorporating energy clearing practices during daily transitions, such as before leaving or upon entering your home or workplace. Other opportune moments include while sitting in your car before or after a journey, after receiving unsettling news, or following a meal that has affected your energy in an undesirable way (e.g., feeling sluggish or experiencing mental fog). Additionally, performing energy clearing upon waking or before sleep can be beneficial.

It’s important to clarify that the purpose of energy clearing is not to numb out emotions or avoid processing difficult experiences. Rather, these practices are intended to help you reach a state of neutrality. From this balanced state, you’re better equipped to process what you’ve encountered and engage with any emotional material that has arisen or address any problems you’re facing. Energy clearing provides a reset, allowing you to approach situations with greater clarity and emotional stability.

For deeper emotional processing and support, I highly recommend working with a licensed mental health practitioner. While energy clearing can be a valuable tool for maintaining energetic hygiene, it’s not a substitute for professional mental health care when dealing with significant emotional challenges or trauma.

Interestingly, there’s value in practicing energy clearing even when you don’t perceive an immediate need. This proactive approach helps strengthen your “clearing muscle,” priming your energy field to respond more readily when you do require it. Regular practice, particularly with meditation and visualization techniques, enhances your ability to clear your field effectively when faced with impactful situations.

I hope you’ve found this information helpful and applicable to your daily life. I’m curious to hear about your experiences with energy clearing. What techniques have you found most effective? How have you integrated these practices into your routine? As this list is by no means exhaustive, I welcome your insights on additional methods you’ve discovered. Please feel free to share your thoughts or questions in the comments below. Your experiences and perspectives can greatly enrich our collective understanding of this important practice.
